8/13/2014 Lesley's Ka'ena Point Trek

Kimo Lyman & I did the KPt hike & monitoring today. We also checked Birth Beach / Mokuleia

On our way to the point we saw some rays playing in the big waves of the swell.
We made it to the point just before the tide started rolling in.
RW02 "Kauai" was on the outside reefs of the Main Pool, shortly after we saw a big seal swimming towards the pool. He made it to RW02 "Kauai's" location, there was some vocalizing and the 2nd seal left. I followed it and sure enough RO40 "Ka'ena" hauled out into his pool.

We went on checking the other spots and pools. RK36 "Kauai Kolohe" was hauled out on some reefs and was washed several times by the rolling in waves till he gave up, entered the water and left.
Kimo L. spotted Temp402 "Squinty" in another cove, he also was washed by the waves but instead of leaving he moved up and hid himself behind some big rocks.

To our surprise, out at the point we saw probably one of the last remaining albatross chicks !

We did a second check of Birth Beach before going up to the house but didn't see RN58 "Luana". Kimo L. will look again in the late afternoon.

Aloha, Lesley
